Return To Death is what we get promised by Brazilian band Krueger – and quite a return to death it is! Coming with amazing artwork, it is only the second full-length album, after Return On To Death in 2001, of the quartet that has been around since 1987. Singer and songwriter Adriano Krueger and his guys provide us with a classic, self-released (!) old school death metal album, with influences of thrash metal.
After a mid-tempo instrumental intro, the title track Return To Death picks up in pace rapidly, mixed with Krueger’s guttered singing. Old school death at its best. It gets more brutal with the next song, Blood. If the pace has been too slow or you up until now – don’t worry, it will be even increased in the second half of the song! Flesh, Lust, Temptation starts again at mid-tempo, just to speed up seconds later. The refrain will be hammered into your head. Bonus for the guys out there: some porn samples await you at the end as well 😉 Technology Chaos, the album’s fourth track, is a typical old school death metal song about humankind’s dependence on technology and the loss of normal communication. Strong. The same pattern is followed in Theatres Of Greed, starting off with a nice intro, until the beast is unleashed again. It then gets somewhat philosophical in Mr. Time: what is the sense of life, as death is awaiting us all? Great song with many switches between mid-tempo and rapid passages. Abstract Process then allows you go get some breath – mid-tempo piece made for nipping on your beer and wiggling your foot. Imperfect starts off with normally cited lyrics, providing a feeling of ancient South-American cults, just to then again result in a speedy and furious track. At the end, even some classic Spanish guitar is mixed into the background. Definitely the most surprising track on the album. Lastly, we get an Inferno, which turns out rather mild – once again many changes between tempi, with a speedy ending.
Conclusion: nice and well-produced death metal album (Blood, Technology Chaos and Theatres Of Greed being the personal favorites here). Not too many surprises, with the exception of Imperfect, but definitely makes you want to hear more. Recommended!
