Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Eternal Closure’s guitarist/backing vocalist Olivier Boitel.
Hey, how are you?
Doing pretty good actually considering 2020 and all that came with it.
Can you tell us something about the history of Eternal Closure?
We have been active in the Montreal scene since 2012. It started as a group of friends wanting to make some good heavy tunes and play some shows, but nothing extremely serious. We’ve been through quite a lot of member changes through our history, taking the project more and more seriously as time goes by. Jo and I (Olivier) are the only ones that are here since the beginning. Our latest new member Maggy has brought new possibilities to our music that I can’t wait to explore on our next album. It hasn’t always been easy, but we feel like the music is worth it, and that one day all the effort we’ve put into it will get back to us. It’s hard work, but it’s fun work!
For people not knowing Eternal Closure (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?
We blend old-school melodic metalcore with modern prog influences. We’re constantly trying to write things that people can recognize but also be surprised by.
When someone doesn’t know Eternal Closure yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?
I think our most representative song in general would be Defying Gravity. However, that was recorded with our old vocalist Max which has now left the band. If you want a taste of what things will sound like with our new vocalist Maggy, watch our video for The Slave or the Owner. It’s a bit heavier than what we usually do, but it’s one of my favorites.
What makes Eternal Closure unique?
Our obsession with cats probably haha. Seriously though, musically we’ve found our own mix of sounds that really doesn’t sound quite like anything else. For example, the whole formula of every bridge being a breakdown really isn’t our thing. We do what the song calls for and rarely structure our songs the same way. The mix of female/male vocalists is also pretty rare in the genre.
Any future plans you can already tell us something about?
A lot of new material has been written. I’d say that, overall, it’s a bit darker and heavier than Color of Our Fears: Rediscovered. Slightly meaner too considering what’s going on around us.
Any upcoming gigs for Eternal Closure? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?
Not really. Due to the pandemic, everything has been pretty much put on hold or canceled. We’d be extremely happy to come play in the Netherlands someday for sure!
How do you think your life would be without music?
Playing video games all day and probably be miserable haha.
What advice would you give to young and starting bands?
Patience. If you really want to do this, you got to go all-in and it’s not going to work out overnight. Don’t expect people to help you and at the same time help people when you can.
Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?
Please check out our recent release: Color of Our Fears: Rediscovered! If you like anything in the metalcore/prog range, I don’t see why you wouldn’t appreciate what we do. Stay safe! Cheers and thanks for the interview!

Hi!
I’m Tim van Velthuysen and I started DutchMetalManiac back in 2014. I’m 29 years old and I live in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Of course, I like metal, but I can also appreciate other musical styles.
In addition to DutchMetalManiac I also have a personal website on which I’ll post various things that won’t fit on DutchMetalManiac, but might be interesting for you as well. It’s in Dutch though.
